UHPC in Building Design and Construction: A Paradigm Shift towards Structural Innovation
Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) is distinguished by its excellent mechanical and durability properties as compared to conventional concrete. UHPC stands at the forefront of modern construction material unlocking avenues for innovative structural application and addressing design challenges in building construction industry. This paper showcases the transformative impact of UHPC through case studies of construction projects in India. In the first case study, the introduction of long-span unbonded post-tensioned UHPC I-Beams facilitated the creation of a lightweight and spacious auditorium within an existing lecture hall complex, demonstrating UHPC’s structural adaptability. The second case study exemplified the efficiency achieved with use of UHPC in fast-paced construction of a roof for a banquet hall. The third case study demonstrated the application of UHPC in carrying heavy axial loads in medium-rise commercial building columns, offering a 56% reduction in cross-sectional area compared to conventional high-strength concrete, thereby optimizing space utilization. Collectively, these case studies illustrate the versatility, efficiency, and transformative potential UHPC offers in revolutionizing contemporary construction practices.
