GCC Clubhouse – UHPC Beams, Mira Road, Mumbai

A long but sweet wait comes to a beautiful end. 8.4 m long Reinforced UHPC I-beams (non-prestressed) cast 6 months backs are finally being erected. A total of 84 beams were cast for the New Club House project of GCC Club and Hotel in Mumbai. The elegance of the design lies in the fact that we could carve out openings for HVAC and Sprinkler lines during the design stage, saving head height for our clients.

For the design savvy, only 3- 12 mm diameter rebar of Gr 500 were required in the bottom flange and the fiber dosage was 2 percent by volume of the UHPC. The casting was done over a period of 28 days. The mean compressive strength over the casting period was 186 MPa with a standard deviation of 8MPa. One day strengths of 65 MPa were observed. The UHPC web was sufficient for shear resistance and hence no shear rebar was provided. Moreover, the wet mixing was done in a Transit mixer by emptying the premix into the TM and then adding iced water, thus proving that even a low tech – low energy system can be used to prepare a high-end material like UHPC.

As per the present plan, 6 floors will be constructed out of which 4 floors will be supported through these precast UHPC I girders. The use of these girders reduced the self-weight of the building by about 30%, which helped in reducing the seismic weight of the building, column cross sections and the number of piles required.
